Sponsored: Another Look at the Citizen Series 8 Collection

When Citizen announced the relaunch of its Series 8 collection at the start of 2021, the watches that composed it quickly caught the attention of the market with their striking looks, utility-driven design, and excellent build quality. Inclusive of three mechanical models — the 870, 830, and 831 — the Series 8 also marked the brand’s introduction of the Caliber 0950 and Caliber 9051, the two movements equipped with superior magnetic resistance to ensure peak performance.

Altogether, the launch of the Series 8 design family represented a new era of infinite possibilities for Citizen’s craftsmanship. As a nod to just that, the figure 8 in the collection’s name represents infinity (∞), here serving as a symbolic nod to Citizen’s bright new chapter in fine mechanical watchmaking.

Sharp Lines, Clean Design, and Modern Movements

The Series 8 collection is best defined its modern, dynamic styling, its distinct watches developed for everyday, versatile wear. Working just as well for a day at the office as a Sunday afternoon relaxing at home, the timepieces are characterized by sharp lines and uncluttered layouts. Each watch in elevated with a matte hairline finish, the accent helping to smartly balance the sporty trio with contemporary suave appeal.

Inside the cases, the Series 8 watches are powered by either the Caliber 0950 or Caliber 9051. The Cal. 0950 is featured within the 870 and 830 models, its highlights including a -5/+10 seconds per day accuracy and a power reserve of 50 hours. The Cal. 9051 is then found within the 831, this automatic mechanism characterized by its excellent magnetic resistance slim design.

While the Cal. 9051 might be better known for its enhanced magnetic resistance and thinness, both movements feature these attributes. Smartly paired together, these signature traits of the calibers help protect the watches they power from accuracy-degrading magnetic fields commonly generated by smartphones, tablets, and other devices, while also allowing for thinner case design and comfortable all-day wear.

The Citizen 870 Mechanical

Leading the Series 8 collection is the 870: a dynamic, sleek timepiece which quickly catches the eye with its novel two-piece bezel design. Featuring hairline and mirror finishes on its slim case shape, the dial within is equally as clean with highly visible indices and matching hands.

Inside, the Cal. 0950 provides excellent timekeeping with superior magnetic resistance, which when paired with the watch’s 100-meter water resistance and solid wrist presence allows for carefree wear of the extremely comfortable watch.

The Citizen 830 Mechanical

Following the 870, Citizen showcases the 830, this mechanical model featuring a fresh new look best expressed via its unique dial. The dial itself is composed of three layers: a metal dial on the bottom, a mother-of-pearl layer in the middle, and a metal lattice with index markers on the top.

The mother-of-pearl and metal lattice encompass the visual components of the innovative time display, together presenting a delicate pattern that creates intriguing contrast between the model’s octagonal case and the clean lines of its face. Available in both a stylish silver or modern gray case, the 830 evokes the spirit of the Series 8 collection with its understated style.

The Citizen 831 Mechanical

Serving as the entry point to the Series 8 collection, the new 831 is no less interesting in its appeal, with its suave style defined by the collection’s signature sharp, contemporary contours. Featuring the same silhouette as the 830 model, the watch is beautifully concise throughout— notably opting for a bold hairline finishing on the bracelet that perfectly matches the clean design of the case.

While featuring the same case as the 830, the 831 is aesthetically differentiated by its dial, featuring a simpler monotone aesthetic. Here, on the display, stylish hands taper off toward its outer edge, while detailed index markers add to its overall distinctive look. The slim automatic Cal. 0951 powers the timekeeping, its excellent magnetic resistance further ensuring a watch as practical as it attractive.
